The Mentoring Programme will enable you to collaborate and build relationships with professionals from other disciplines and different organisations.

Are you involved in conducting, reviewing or supporting research that includes (or is relevant to) adults with impaired capacity to consent in the UK?

Researchers at Cardiff University are conducting a Wellcome-funded project, ACCORD, to explore how the ethical and legal frameworks governing research involving adults lacking capacity to consent are being implemented in practice, and to address the challenges that can be encountered.

We would like to talk to researchers, health and social care practitioners, and members of research governance organisations (e.g REC members or sponsor representatives) with experience of these issues. We will then use the findings to develop interventions to address the barriers across individual, organisational and systems levels. We will be conducting online interviews and focus groups. Interviews may take up to 1 hour and focus groups may take approx. 1.5 to 2 hours, and they will be arranged for convenient dates and times. Professor Kate Woodthorpe  is leading an ESRC funded study  on the end of life at home.  The aim of this project is to better understand the origins of the policy drive for and people’s preference of living at home towards the end of their life; how different housing types and tenures shape their experience of being at home for patients who have advanced progressive illness, their families and friends, and health and social care professionals; and what changes could be made to housing design, plans, policies, and practice to better support people reaching the end of their lives at home.

The project team has recently met with other researchers across the UK who are working on various projects on dying at home, to find ways to coordinate the projects and future events. If you are working on this topic, please get in touch with Kate to be involved: k.v.woodthorpe@bath.ac.uk.

The advanced ethics course is a much needed course, the only course focusing on the complex situations experienced professionals face during the course of their daily work. The advanced ethics course builds on the course run by the Association for Palliative Medicine. The only requirement to attend the advanced ethics course is an interest in thinking through ethical questions that arise in clinical practice.  

The course is developed afresh each year, in collaboration with Professor Derek Willis and Dr Idris Baker. The learning objectives and programme will help identify what you can learn by attending. You will gain 5 hours of CPD credits by attending and many more by post course reading. Your organisation gets value for money as the course delivers high standards of professional knowledge, is educationally sound, allowing staff time for discussion and supports staff in setting continuing educational goals for the year following the course.
